ReviOUYA Review #46 – Fractal Combat X

Fractal Combat X, by OYK Games, is a Flight Combat game where you take the role of a new pilot and with whichever plane chosen, head out to various planets and destroy the enemy.  While this may seem simple, it will prove not so much once put onto the battlefield, with hordes of enemies flying and shooting missiles at you all at once.

Graphics: 9/10

The Plane models all have great, and varying detail to them.  The menus look and handle nicely as well.  The enemy models vary from planes, to guardians, to extractors (land attackers), and all are very well designed.  The smoke and missiles, are well detailed as well, and with the ability of having many of them on screen at once leads for a hectic time.  The game does, however, suffer from slowdown.  Specifically on worlds that contain water.  As the water has transparencies added to them, the extra calculations does bog down the frame rate a bit.  Aside from the slowdown on the odd world, this game is very well designed, and looks stunning.

And another one bites the dust

Sounds: 10/10

The music is simply phenomenal to listen to.  With a rather modern soundtrack which includes an orchestra-ish tone to it.  It certainly gives the game a more in-depth feel because of it.   There is also an ability to set the track number before each level, or to turn it off completely, or even set to auto.  There are plenty of sound effects to boot.  With targeting, missiles firing and connecting with an enemy (or yourself), and even a voice to say “mission failed” and things like that.  The music and sound effects add greatly to the overall experience of the game.

Gameplay: 8/10

Overall, the gameplay is a tad shallow.  You are given a set of missions for each planet.  A set of base and a set of extra missions. Completing the base missions allow you to progress further, and completing the extra missions allow you to unlock hidden artwork.  The controls are easy to understand and get into, There is a thrust, a missile, and then the analogue stick to manoeuvre your plane, and the action is immense.  There starts out with a few planes, then more missions go through, more variety comes, with the ground enemies, and the Guardians.  Then things get more tough as there are different types of each enemy, all with a higher defensive and stronger, and more frequent missiles being fired.  Completing missions awards a higher score and money to spend on upgrades and new planes.  There are also multiple classes as well.  Overall leads to quite an exciting game.

Overall:

Fractal Combat X is an engaging action game that is perfect for the odd 10-15 mins of time to spare.. though sometimes more time will be lost on the game as it is easy to get into the action, leaving you wanting more.  For those into arcade-styled flight combat games, this is certainly a must have!
