ReviOUYA Review #44 – SILENCER

Silencer is an online stealth action game where you, against other hacker-spies, infiltrate a government military building and crack the codes to get the secret items hidden in each place.  The winner is the one who collects the most secret items out of everyone else.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics are quite smooth looking.  The setting is futuristic and everything, including the NPCs and the enemies look the part.  The animations run smoothly as well, and there are nice little minor effects such as rain, jetpack exhaust, and even the player breathing.  The games framerate runs smoothly, until things get a bit busy on the screen, then things slow down a bit.  This is only on the online multiplayer mode.  Another minor issue is that the game feels a bit too dark, which makes it next to impossible to play in broad daylight.  Aside from those small issues, the graphics are quite nice to look at while playing.

Hacking all the things!

Sounds: 6/10

There isn’t anything for music, at all.  However, the Sound effects are actually quite nice to listen to.  When outside there is a downpour of rain, and the player’s footsteps can be heard in any location, as well as jetpack and gun sounds.  Silencer has plenty of sound effects, and the lack of music becomes rather unnoticeable when in an online match.

Gameplay: 5/10

Silencer is an Online-only game. The tutorial is pretty straight forward, but there is one thing you notice real quick, there are a lot of buttons that are used, and each button does it’s own thing.  This can make it quite confusing to play, and can be very crippling in online matches.  The Online matches themselves are extremely tough, to the point of quitting due to frustration.  The complicated controls are one issue related to it, but another is the elite users of Silencer that know everything about the maps, and know how to prevent you from getting even remotely close to one artifact.  Because this is a competitve game, players are able to kill each other to slow each other down.  While normally fun, it becomes a chore when a new person, just getting into the game, gets killed by everyone while trying to remember how to disguise themselves.  It is certainly not the best experience.  The online match-making menus are touch-pad only in terms of navigation.  So the only way to create a room is via OUYA Touchpad, which can be a bit cumbersome for those not comfortable with it.

Overall:

Silencer is a game that greatly needs some sort of way to practice outside the Tutorial mode.  With an online mode that is already dominated by a few players, it makes it difficult to want to get into the game and try to rise the ranks.  Addressing those issues could certainly make this a solid online stealth action game.  Which is not only different, but a great genre combination to play with one another.  Currently, due to its bare online state filled with a couple elite players, Silencer is not a game worth playing unless you are well-versed with the game.
