ReviOUYA Review #42 – Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta

Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta is an action adventure made by Semaphore Studios.  Taking place in the Middle East, in modern times, Faris and Dania Jawad’s archaeological raid goes a bit sideways, thus starting a new adventure for them looking for Ibn Battuta’s treasures.  A game with action, exploration, and lots of pretty scenes.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics are absolutely stunning.  There is a ton of detail in the scenes, the characters, even the objects to interact with.  The gui is easy to understand as well.  The transition from the opening movie and gameplay are almost seamless, and some of the scenes in the game are simply beautiful, like the entrance to the tomb as well as the city once entered.  Unearth has some places where it stutters, this normally is the case in the action scenes. There is also some odd clipping issues where either models turn black or the sky is cut off, however, this is only evident in the beginning of the game.

Gaze upon the pretty that is this scene!

Sounds: 10/10

This game has full voice acting, which is quite good.  There are both English and Arabic voices in game, and there is an ability to switch between both.  The music certainly helps the environment of the game as well as get the player motivated to explore onward, run away, etc.  It was all very well composed and enhances the game beautifully.  The sound effects are quite strong as well.  Nothing feels out of place in terms of the sounds.

Gameplay: 5/10

The game has many different elements to it.  Unfortunately as a whole it was executed in a rather mediocre way.  Seemed to be an issue of doing too much at once.  The Exploration parts and action parts are very well constructed.  However, the RC and Driving portion of the game leaves much to be desired, with its slippery turning and car physics being almost non-existent.  The game is quite buggy as well.  There is the occasional falling through floors, primarily in the Temple level, and seems to only happen after cutscenes.  The Driving scene has some pretty wacky collision detection, sometimes just making no sense at all.  The game as a whole is quite a fun adventure from beginning to end.  The story tells itself quite well, and the transition between scenes blends quite well, making it an enjoying experience.  However, the bugs mentioned above is what gives the gameplay a low score.

Unearthed is a very beautiful game, with a very well-telling story.  I certainly look forward to the next chapter, hoping that it will remove the bugs and make it a bit more lengthier.  Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta, while short, is still quite an engaging game to play, despite its number of bugs within the game.  It is highly recommended for anyone who is wanting a short-yet-exciting adventure in the Middle East.
