Fist of Awesome is a beat em up created by Nicoll Hunt. Starring Tim Burr, he gets set into a time altered world where bears rule, and his fist can talk. It is up to Tim to set time straight and bring it all back to the way it was.
Everything looks quite nice, but somehow feels a bit inconsistent. Some sprites and backgrounds have more detail than others, and some don’t necessarily fit the whole pixel look of the game itself. This doesn’t detract from the game at all however, and for some it can be enhancing. At most it is a slight distraction. The game itself moves quite fluidly, there are no hiccups in the game in the slightest, even when there are tons of enemies on the screen. When getting damaged the screen slowly fades to red as well, the more damage received, the more red the screen gets, basically used as a warning to get out as fast as possible. It works!
The music is nice to listen to. Though nothing is catchy to want to keep going through the game, it is still a solid soundtrack. The sound effects, however, can get annoying. Especially when Tim Burr says “FIST” every time he uses his fist special attack. There is the ability to adjust volume of both sound effects and music, which may not be really needed, but is nice if one is willing to listen to music or sfx only.
The game is pretty lengthy, there is also an arena mode with different characters to play as. The Main game has a story with some pretty funny dialogue before and after the levels, as well as some funny dialogue when walking towards certain places and objects. The game does start to feel stale after a while, however. Especially when there is no real incentive to continue as all enemies are more-or-less identical, and there are no new skills acquired, nor items to collect. There is a partial achievement system, meaning achievements can be seen when hit, but there is no achievement list of any sort to see the list of achievements collected, or achievements total.
Fist of Awesome is one of OUYAs first Beat em up games and it doesn’t disappoint. While there are thing that could have been improved on, it is still a solid brawler on its own. Fist of awesome will leave you laughing, even if it is for a short period of time.
