ReviOUYA Review #23 – Deep Dungeons of Doom

Deep Dungeons of Doom is a Dungeon-battle styled RPG created by Bossa Studios.  You play as either a Crusader, a Mercenary, or a Witch and go through the story to find the almighty deep dungeon of doom.  Use your timing, your smarts, and any weapons you may find to get to the end of each dungeon!

Graphics:  9/10

The graphics in this game are all pixel art, and it has been done extremely well.  While the sprites may be not too big, they are extremely well detailed, down to the animations.  The animations of both enemy and player sprites are very well detailed and very fluid, right down to their death animations.  The “cutscenes” before and after a dungeon are all pixel art as well.  The Stages are no different, this makes for a nice, fluid and polished-looking game.

Sounds: 8/10

The music in this game is phenomenal.  While it may not be a fully orchestrated sound track, everything is done via synthesizer, and it sounds fantastic.  Every stage has its own theme song, that is engaging to listen to and keep the player wanting to play.  The sound effects for the game are clear and concise.  You know if you get hit, you know if you hit.  There are sound effect for every motion that happens, so a beat is never missed.   A bug was encountered, however, where if you switch between soundtracks at any point in time for any reason (ie: seeing a statue, world map, etc) sometimes the music stops playing.  It doesn’t happen often, but it can throw off the game when you are in the groove.  Otherwise the music is extremely pleasing to the ears and definitely makes playing the game more enjoyable.

Gameplay: 8/10

The game is extremely simple to learn.  It consists of attacking with O, blocking with U, and going further up/down the dungeon with the control stick/Dpad.  While it may seem simple and dull, you are given a very little amount of help, so the block button will be your best friend.  You can only use the attack button once every few seconds (depending on agility).  You can raise your stats, and get stat raises from shrines and weapons/armour/accessories.  Keep in mind, however, some of those items/shrines have draw backs when used.  Lose some health per floor being one of them.  So strategizing as to which item to hold on to is crucial in the ascent/descent of the dungeons.  Having a “honour” section as well adds to the replayability as they will ask you to do different things leading to returns of gold.   Topped with enemies that get tougher each floor, and strong bosses, this makes for quite the engaging game.

Overall:

Deep Dungeons of Doom is a very engaging game thanks to its wonderfully catchy soundtrack.  Its visuals are no laughing matter either, as they not only get the job done, but they look stunning as well, and everything moves absolutely fluid throughout the game.  This is a pixel Art game done right.  The gameplay is simple to begin with, but as you progress through the game, it gets very difficult.  This game is highly recommended for those who want something challenging and a change of pace.
