ReviOUYA Review #17 – Babylonian Twins

Babylonian Twins is a puzzle platformer created by App Barbecue, a remake of the original game of the same name on the Commodore Amiga that was never released.  You star as the twin princes of Babylon, Nasir and Blasir, and the goal is to get to the high priest, overthrow him, and reclaim the kingdom.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics in this game are beautiful.  Everything well drawn with such detail.  The levels are all vibrant in their own way, and nothing is too noisy.  There is quite a bit of variation between areas, meaning no two areas have the exact same set of enemies.  The enemies have detail right down to how they walk.  The twins also, have their own set of individual animations.  Every frame well thought out with nothing out of place.  There are some enemies that have a sprite issue where you see a line below them as they move, but is quite rare to see it.  It can also be hard to see some of the enemies as they blend into their surroundings.  The game does not slowdown at all on any level.  This leaves for a nice, fluid game.

I think that kid is waving at me..?

Sound: 10/10

The music in this game is beautiful, and further embellishes the setting, Babylon.  Every song has its own charm to it and is nice to listen to, without making you feel like falling asleep.  The sounds match well with everything goes on, from the twins getting hurt, to knocking out the enemies, to jumping.  The sound effects are not overbearing and not too quiet either, they were just right.

Gameplay: 7/10

The game starts off quite challenging.  It does have a set of tutorials though to help you get started, but once those tutorials are done, you are in for a challenging time.  The game doesn’t let up on the challenge either, and is tough from beginning to end.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as  it gets you thinking about each puzzle and it doesn’t get dull quickly.  Both characters have their own health bar, and if one dies, then the level has to be restarted, adding to the challenge.  Each twin has his own moves and weapons to use, and you cannot complete any level just by using one character.  Both need to be used in order to progress in any way.  The controls are simple and easy to use, there is no slipping of the joysticks.  Everything feels tight and responds well to this challenging game.

Babylonian Twins is an unforgiving puzzle platformer that stars two twins reclaiming the throne from the evil high priest.  This game has some smooth, beautiful graphics and a soundtrack that gives the feeling of being in Persian lands.  Even though the game is tough as nails, it should still be considered being played as it is one of the better puzzle platforms out on the OUYA system.  Highly recommend giving this one a try.
