ReviOUYA Review #10 – Super Grid Run

Super Grid Run is an arcade game built of face paced twitch action with only one objective: avoid everything coming at you.  You play as a cube going through a tunnel that moves at a faster pace by the second.  The goal being to get the highest score and the longest time.

Graphics: 9/10

The graphics are fairly simple.  The entire background and the cube you control change colours throughout and you are constantly speeding faster through a tunnel that is grid-like, with grid-like obstacles and other multi-coloured obstacles.  The game doesn’t slow down for a second either.  No frame skipping, just smooth solid speed.  The only issue noticed (and it isn’t a big one) is that the cube, although translucent, when centered makes it hard to see what is in front of you.

Cubular, man!

Sound: 10/10

The electronic music gives a retro arcade feel to the game.  Each mode having its own set of music, and all the music is well done.  The death sound isn’t too striking, and there is a light sound whenever you get a powerful.  It is obvious though that this game focuses on the retro style music, and it does a great job at it.  The music is catchy and highly memorable, it will have you humming the tune even when not playing.

Gameplay: 10/10

The game is a simple “avoid everything except power-ups” type of game, and it does a really good job at being that.  There are 7 modes going from Easy, Normal, hard, 1m Conquest, 2m Conquest, and Weekly Map.  The weekly map has a new map generated every week that you can go through.  Easy, Normal, and Hard being the difficulty of the map. 1m and 2m Conquest are timed maps.  All these maps (except Weekly Map) are randomly generated based on what section of the map you are in.  The controls are quite simple, using only the joystick to move, and O to make “half” movements instead of full movements.  The game is easy to learn and hard to master, which makes this wonderful to simply pick up and play.

Overall:

Super Grid run is a fun game with fast gameplay, smooth graphics and killer music.  It is easy to pick up and play, but extremely difficult to master, making you want to try again to get the top score.  The are also Online leader boards to see where you stand against the other users as well playing this game.  This game oozes quality, and certainly deserves a play for anyone into the classic arcade feel.

Note: Highly NOT recommended for those who are easily susceptible to DIMS (Doom-induced motion sickness)
