ReviOUYA Review #6 – Motrya

Motrya is a classic, episodic, console-style RPG with a compelling story and likable characters.  You start off as a kid named Murlor who is trying to get through his final year in school along with his best friend Dayang.   There are only 2 episodes out at the moment with 2 more on the way.  This game has that old-school challenge, and will make you feel right at home.

Graphics: 7/10

The graphics are alright.  It appears there is a 256 color limit, maybe smaller but the developers were working to try to get around it.  The backgrounds are nice, and quite detailed given the limited colour palette .  The sprites aren’t all that bad either, though they do look a bit squished.  You get used to the squished look after a while.  The battle effects are fairly basic as well.  Nothing overly breath taking, but nothing completely lacking in the department either.  The monsters also vary in detail, and also vary in look.  So you will have a hard time running into two different monsters that look the same, which is refreshing compared to the many palette swaps that most other RPGs do.

I’ll get you Anastasia, and your little dog too!

Sound: 7/10

The music works very well for the game.  It can get your blood rushing when in a battle, or make you feel sad in one of those heart breaking moments.  The music is composed and choreographed quite well, and you never think that it is lacking, or unfitting.  In terms of sounds, they are basic but very clear.  Nothing sounds muffled and it compliments animations and whatever else is going on throughout the game.  Neither the music or sound effects are memorable by any means, but they certainly get the job done.

Gameplay: 9.5/10

The gameplay really shines here.  You partake in a deep, compelling story that doesn’t seem to ever get dry.  There is never really a lull in the story either.  The battle system is simple, yet interesting.  Your ‘forlae’, which is magic in the game, can be used as an attack, or you can use a sword(or any other weapon), skills, or a forlae scroll to fight your enemies.  The enemies are no pushovers either.  The game can get quite tough really fast, but if you die you will be able to request a hint to try to win against that fight.  The Boss battles are dramatic and equally challenging.  This game makes sure to punish you if you are unprepared.  There is also a card game in there as well where you have to to have a number higher than your opponents.  This is a feature-rich game with a compelling story and spot on gameplay.

Overall

Motrya is a fun RPG that should be played by any RPG enthusiast.  The lovable characters, deep story that will leave you wanting more, and challenging gamplay bring back the feeling of the Console RPGs from the years back.  Even though the graphics are limited, the story and dialogue more than make up for it.  This game is certainly a must play!
