ReviOUYA Review #5 – Saturday Morning RPG

Saturday Morning RPG was one of the first games to come out to OUYA.  The latest iteration being in August of 2013.  It is an RPG that bring in the classic console-style RPG format, with a slew of different mechanics.  All packed into an 80’s cartoon themed game. It is quite an innovative game, but not without its issues.

Graphics: 6.5/10

The graphics are this game are a mix between 2D sprites and 3D renders.  While this is no bad thing, it does make the game look very inconsistent with its look and feel.  Some characters also seem more blocky compared to others.  The backgrounds look nice, and make the game scenes pop out.   The battle scenes aren’t much different either.  There are some good-looking effects, and then some bad-looking effects.  With those and then the sprites looking inconsistent (some enemies have more detail than others, and almost all have more detail than the player), makes the game just have that feel of being unpolished.

Fighting them lizard dudes!

Sounds: 7/10

The music fits this game completely.  Everything making it seem like a Saturday morning 80’s cartoon.  From the intro, to the credits.  The BGM for the battle scenes is catchy but can start to feel annoying after a while, and nothing too memorable.  The sound effects are alright, nothing special about them, some being more bothersome on the ears than others, but still not bad.  The sounds in this game definitely feel more polished though as they all fit in with the theme of the game.

Gameplay: 7/10

The controls are pretty simple, simply move around with the joystick, O to confirm, A to cancel.  Typical standard Console – RPG layout.  The Battle system is very innovative.  It allows you to power yourself up via battery charging, and use attacks based on 80’s items, be it Share Bear Dolls, Transformer Action figures, protractors, Windows Floppy Discs, etc.  Also, before every battle, you can scratch stickers on your notebook, this allows stat increases for you and decreases for your enemy depending on the sticker.  This can be done using the touchpad and the joystick.  It definitely keeps the player coming back.  It is episodic as well, so it gives a break in time between each part of the game, which helps if you need a break from it once in a while.  A break will be needed to, as this game can start to feel really repetitive really fast.  There are still plenty of bugs that can hamper your experience with the game as well as multiple areas, battle scenes, and attacks with awful slowdown.   With these issues about, it can easily detract the player away from the game.

Saturday Morning RPG is an overall okay game.   The story is solid, and the graphics are okay despite their inconsistencies.  While the gameplay is innovative, it gets pushed back by the number of bugs and slowdown throughout various places in the game.  The music and sound effects are probably the most redeeming quality of this game, and even then it falls short from being sometimes loud and obnoxious, not all times, but some.  Overall if you love RPGs, or 80s references, then by all means check this out!
